In a few days we observe the fast of Tisha B’Av, mourning the loss of the two Jerusalem Temples. The Talmud tells us the cause of the Second Temple’s destruction was senseless hatred and political insults. A man threw a party and intended to invite his good friend Kamtza. His servant erred, mistakenly invited the host’s enemy, Bar Kamtza. This led to the insulting of Bar Kamtza, his slandering of the Jewish people to Caesar, and Bar Kamtza’s wounding of an animal Caesar sent to the Temple as a peace offering. The sacrifice was rejected as unfit, which Caesar took as a political insult and rebellious move so he invaded, resulting in the destruction of the Holy Temple. more

Tiberius is one of my favorite cities in Israel. It was the home of many great rabbis who lived or were buried there. The Sanhedrin fled from Jerusalem during the Great Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire, and after several moves eventually settled in Tiberias. Many scholars believe that the Mishna and the Jerusalem Talmud were compiled by Rabbi Judah haNasi in Tiberias. It also happens to be the location of Pagoda, my favorite Chinese restaurant in all of Israel. A sad part of Tiberias history occurred 75 years ago. On Oct. 2, 1938, an organized group of Arab attackers massacred 21 Jews. Three of the victims were women and ten were kids younger than 12. They were stabbed, shot and burned. more

A group of pro-Israel Jews have formed a 2016 campaign group called, “Jewish Americans Ready For Hillary!” On their website, “Jewish Americans Ready For Hillary!” claim, “Throughout her career, Hillary Clinton has fought for the issues that matter most to Jewish Americans.” That claim is not true. more

And we can't find out who authorized the sale of automatic weapons to the Mexican drug cartels. more

Hillel CEO and President Eric Fingerhut plans to a review how campus Hillels should welcome other points of view, such as those of the faux pro-Israel organization, J-Street. [But] J-Street is not a pro-Israel group with a different perspective; it is an Arab-funded anti-Israel “wolf” in “sheep’s clothing.” For Hillel to tolerate it is an outrage. more
