MDS readers raise 18K for fire-stricken moshav

Posted

Manhattan Day School students were on a mission: To read as many pages as they could and raise as much money as possible for Moshav Beit Meir, a community in Israel destroyed by terrorist fires.

The Read for Israel Read-a-Thon involved the entire school, Nursery through Eighth Grade. Parents, relatives and friends were asked to donate money for the pages read.

Funds raised will support Moshav Beit Meir and assist in rebuilding homes, purchase supplies and aid families. In addition to helping the families in Israel, the school’s faculty set out to instill in the students the belief that as a “family,” they can make a difference.

Students learned about the value of resiliency, emunah, and the importance of being one nation.

“We can teach the value of ‘oneness’ by instilling in our youth the realization that when we work together, such as participating in the Read for Israel Read-a-thon, we can make a difference in someone else’s life,” says reading coordinator Julie Averbuch.

“It was wonderful to connect reading with chessed at MDS,” adds Associate Principal Judy Melzer. “Numerous students read so many pages and tehillim to benefit our brothers and sisters in Israel who lost their homes and their possessions to the terrorist fires that occurred.”
