1,019 empty chairs, one for each corona victim in Israel

The display was striking: 1,019 empty plastic chairs set up in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, one for each Israeli victim of coronavirus.

The chairs were set up on Monday, after Israel passed the 1,000-death threshold over the weekend. Each bore a sign with the name of a person who has died, and a single rose.

Meanwhile, the Yediot Ahronot newspaper covered its front page with the names of the country’s dead, in a design reminiscent of the New York Times cover from when the United States passed the 100,000-death threshhold.

To try to limit its rising death toll, Israel on Tuesday imposed restrictions on 40 “red” cities and towns.
